Education in Assam
Assam, the most populous state of North East shows her literacy rate (72.19%) below the national average (74.04%) as per census 2011. The Education system in Assam is not very encouraging, as most Government schools do not function properly or regularly. Studies and surveys conducted shows alarming dropout rates in the state of Assam, 15.36%, the highest in the country. Deprived of education the backward communities are kept under inhuman and unjust situations, and thus deprived of all the ways of development and privileges.

Trinitarian Mission in North East India
Inspired by the redemptive charism of St. John de Matha, the Trinitarians launched a missionary project under the Archdiocese of Guwahati in Assam in the year 2008. Upholding the freedom of all people, especially the poor who are marked by the hardships of the human condition, the Trinitarians are committed to a way of life rooted in the Gospel and expressed in works of mercy and redemption.
After being present in the state of Assam for over a decade, the Trinitarians have felt the dare need of education and have begun a Trinitarian School called DeMathaEnglish Medium School. As per the 2011 census, above 90% of the population live in the rural areas. Education is one of the primary needs here. Literacy in the local area where we propose our school is about 72%. The greatest need here, we strongly believe, is to have a school for the children to get quality, affordable, education not travelling far from home nor putting their life at stake. DeMatha school was inaugurated on Feb 14, 2019.
Practical Results and Outcome
The motto of DeMatha School is ‘Educate to Liberate’. DeMatha School aims to liberate children of the locality and the nearby villages in many ways. They will not have to travel too long to get the much-needed education. The children will not have to depend on transportation which often is unsafe. This will eventually help them to earn livelihood for them and their families. Once educated adequately they will be able to find jobs which will eventually save them from being snatched by the underground miscreants. Crime will decrease and the education will bring them to think maturely and think not only just about their well-being but also of their neighbours as well. Also, some of the well-educated and qualified in the locality will staff the school and it will provide employment for some. Education will help the children to be mature citizens enabling them to lead the nation to its desired destiny.
Thus the outcome will be the integral formation of the students, which helps the children to grow intellectually, psychologically and spiritually.
